NoVa Carms- Dining Room!
Over 10 years of HGTV viewing experience, helping my dad on house projects, and also now having the wonderful job of creating Honey Do lists for my husband, I have decided to share the stress free process ( =P) of House DIYs and Before and After.
1st NoVA Project is the Dining Room. Florida homes are open floor plans and this home has a traditional colonial vibe. Since we bought the house site unseen, when I first walked in the home, these were the immediate things running through my brain:
Will my grey wash furniture work on oak floors?
What do I do with this oak floor?
Ugh not feeling the grey, need this painted- (how do I convince my husband to paint this…. should I use my honey do card for paint request or cleaning these floors)
Oh my gosh- the ceiling is 8FT - how will my 9FT Christmas tree work in this?
Hmmm— chandelier search ASAP
After this insane conversation with myself, I looked to my Design Mentors Shea and Joanna (yes we are friends - they just don’t know it yet) I decided to paint the walls myself. (Because when it comes to Carm Charming- patience is not a virtue and I needed to feel at home again).
Step 1: Paint the walls
After a morning Lowes Run, 1 Starbucks Venti Iced Coffee, and 5 hrs later, we have New Light and Bright walls courtesy of Sherwin Williams Pure White. I was concerned on choosing a white that would pull Warm especially with the oak, but found that this Shade leaned toward Cool undertones due to the light exposure.
Step 2: Change the Chandelier
I am a PB fanatic, but as a trained Maxinista (for those who don’t know, that is when you have been trained to NOT buy full price items and you mentally challenge yourself to find a better deal), I did not have the patience to wait for a PB Premier Day Sale- so AMAZON to the rescue.
Yes, you get the affordable deal along with the lifetime experience of helping your husband practice his electrician skills. (As I am holding up the light fixture, praying I do not get electric shock!) I wanted a simple and clean look this time.
I could not be happier with the Sputnik design, price was good, but you will need at least 3 hours as nothing comes assembled (and we had to fix the wiring in the room).
Step 3: Reuse and Recycle
Yay Walls are now bright and light making a canvas for the decor to pop. So far- not bothered by the mix of wood tones with the floor, I’ll see how I feel six months later.
Until the next project-Carm
